Straw Bracelets

  

Background:  Fine Motor Control is a skill needed for printing and writing.  Using materials around us in an unusual way to create one-of-a-kind decorations is an activity that helps develop this skill in a way that is inviting and fun.  Patterning, a mathematical skill, can also be practiced if desired or developmentally appropriate.

Objective:  Families and young learners shall enjoy together making one or more straw bracelets.

Materials Needed:  Drinking straws, safe scissors, pipe cleaners or string,  other materials as desired.

Process:  According to developmental stage of student, he or a family member cuts up drinking straws into desired lengths.  The learner then strings the cut straws on the pipe cleaner or string randomly or in a pattern, such as blue orange green – blue orange green.

Skills/Learning Styles/Intelligences: Fine Motor Control, visual/spatial, socialization, interprersonal.

Extended Learning:  Young learner may wish to make a bracelet for each family member and/or several for himself.  Concept of long and short may be explored if young learner opts to make a matching necklace.

Character Development:  This week:  Think about how your actions will affect others.

Research  shows that students whose families are involved in their education achieve more at present and in future.

Research also shows the basics learned in preschool years are foundation for further learning and brain development.

Objetivo:   Las familias y los jovenes aprendices deberian disfrutar juntos haciendo uno o mas pulseras de sorbetes.

Materiales que necesita:  sorbetes, tijeras seguras, alambres o cordones,  otros materiales tales como usted lo decida
