Materials:
Project: a small artwork to be left.

Secrets of Rusty Things: Transforming Found Objects into Art
- This book takes readers behind the scenes to show them each step in the assemblage art process. It covers everything from gathering found-object materials to putting them together in a way that tells a meaningful story.
Recycled Re-Seen: Folk Art from the Global Scrap Heap
- Whether it is a dustpan made out of a license plate, a bowl fashioned from a bent vinyl record, a pair of sandals with soles made of Goodyear tire treads, or a tin-can lantern, folk artists all over the world are turning trash into treasure.
Organizational Preparations:
- Cut out all tags and punch holes in them.
- Print out stickers.
- Put page on class website (edit after receiving student input).
- Number all tags so that recipients can refer back to them.
Motivation/Introduction:
Teacher asks:
Through history, what has the function of art been? What is it used for?
Show examples of artwork on tables, asking groups to choose what feeling it
emits and write down how. Report back to class ways art can communicate
feeling. Brainstorm as a class further ways.
Review established functions and how art communicates.
Process/Procedure
Teacher goes over project as she shows PowerPoint of examples & exemplars.
Teacher passes out tags. Students pass around a sheet of paper to record their # and their name.
Students put sticker on the back & create their work. Students attach yarn or
ribbon through hole to attach it to something. Sample copy for label:
You are the recipient of Found Art
While students are working, teacher asks:
What it would be like to find a piece of Found Art & what effect it would have. What would you be thinking about? What would you be asking yourself?
This form of art is something that is new and contemporary. How do you think contemporary art affects or influences the art of the future? (List on board.)
As a class, students decide what information needs to be on the web page.
Closure
Students complete Reflection Sheet.
Teacher challenges students to think of a creative place to leave their Found Art. Class awaits emails of recipients to track them.
Clean-Up: Found Art is to be kept in art folders.
