Flip-Flop Design
Flip-flops are my
favorite shoes to wear. When we think of flip-flops many things
may come to mind. What do you think about when you hear the word
flip-flops? Jot these things down on a piece of paper. Now think
about who you are – what best describes you? – what colors
do you like? – what are your interests? Jot all of these things down as well.

You will be given a foam
core flip-flop. There are many different collage materials that
you will have the opportunity to explore. Carefully think about
how you will design your flip-flop so that it reflects who you
are – someone should be able to look at the finished design
and know that it is your flip-flop based on how you decorated
it. Choose your materials so that there is a balance of color
and a sense of pattern and texture. NEATNESS COUNTS! Once you
have designed your flip-flop, you will present it to the class
so that we may learn more about who you are and why you designed
the flip-flop the way you did.
They will then be displayed in class and on campus.
Objectives:
Students’ design will reflect self-identity
Students will demonstrate knowledge of
collage techniques
Students will demonstrate understanding of
the elements and principles of design with emphasis on color, space, pattern, and texture
Students will demonstrate craftsmanship in cutting and gluing
Materials:
Foam core flip-flops, Pipe Cleaners,
colored construction paper,
Scissors,
glitter,
glue,
hot glue gun,
glue sticks,
markers,
crayons,
Colored Pencils,
gel pens,
fabric
scraps, decorative paper punchers,
buttons,
assorted beads,
shells,
colored
tissue paper,
magazines, and various other collage
materials
The most economical way to create these is to take sheets of Foam Board
and cut them to size. If the foam sheet is 30 x 20 inches, you will be able to make around 20 shoes at around $1.30 each
If you want actual flip flops that can be painted or decorated, the cheapest we could find are Foam Flip Flops Assortment
with a package of 24 for $71.76 ($2.99 each).
You can see a lesson on how to make paper flip flops here.

Procedure:
Using your brainstorm list of who you are, sketch out a design
of your flip- flop on the back side of your brainstorm paper,
focusing on pattern. Gather magazines and cut out images and
words that reflect who you are. Cut images to contour. Have an
idea of other materials you may want to use, and gather some of
theses items from the supply table to bring back to your table.
Begin by cutting colored papers into shapes, paper punching,
drawing and/or coloring designs onto the foam core from your
sketch and laying out your collage materials onto the flip-flop.
DO NOT GLUE ANYTHING DOWN UNTIL YOU ARE HAPPY WITH ITS
PLACEMENT! Both sides and edges must be covered. Once your
design looks balanced (with color and pattern) you may glue down
all of your materials and affix pipe cleaners for straps with
glue gun. You may add buttons, beads, etc to the straps. Set
aside to dry. You will present next class.

Note from Laurie: This was a
great assignment to do at the beginning of the school year, as I
really learned a lot about the students and they learned a lot
about each other!
