Lesson: Self Portraits
Procedure
This is a final project in my class. I bought two large door
mirrors and broke them into many odd-shaped pieces ($10). Using
masking
tape, tape all edges for protection.
Next, students are each given a piece of a broken mirror. They will draw their self portrait in the broken mirror. The outside shape of the drawing would stay in the
same
shape as the piece of mirror.
Students are told to pay attention to facial feature
placement. Students were asked to incorporate at least one eye, nose
and mouth into the
drawing and the background should show their self-interests. They
could use any medium we had used so far. Students were told that they must show some contour
shading. When finished, using 12 x 18" (30 x 46 cm) colored construction paper,
students must "present"
their portrait in a unique way... other than a simple frame. The construction paper would be in the general shape of the mirror or other shapes as shown in the example below:
